The official synopsis

Deep Silver's synopsis opens: "The year is 2039." For a quarter of a century, the last survivors of nuclear war have been locked in bitter conflict in the Metro tunnels beneath "the poisoned city of Moscow". Now they have been united by a single leader, a fanatical Spartan known as Hunter.

That unity is not peace. Hunter's Novoreich regime "rules through propaganda and fear", subjugating the population in the name of a new war for the surface against "a dark and terrifying enemy".

Outside the city, in the wilderness, the reclusive Stranger is haunted by violent waking nightmares. When "the ghosts of his past" force him out of exile, he must journey into the ruins of Moscow, "to the one place he swore he'd never go. The Metro."

The Stranger

The Stranger is METRO's first fully voiced protagonist. 4A Games executive producer Jon Bloch describes him on the PlayStation Blog as "a recluse plagued by violent nightmares", forced back into a place he swore never to return to.

The April 2026 reveal trailer takes place inside one of those nightmares, dragging him through "layers of increasingly disturbing scenes where violence and trauma collide" before he wakes in post-apocalyptic Moscow. The official description says he "hurtles through a loop of a never-ending nightmare, never certain of what is real".

The August 2026 Renegade trailer gives "a deeper look into the mind and the motivations of the Stranger". At Sevastopolskaya Station he uncovers vital information about the pursuit of his target; who or what he is chasing has not been revealed. Deep Silver has promised to show more of "his true mission" before launch.

His helmet matters too: the Collector's Edition replica is a copy of it, battle damage and all. See the Spartan helmet page.

Hunter and the Novoreich

Deep Silver describes the Spartans as a symbol of hope that once protected the Metro, and says the old Spartans are gone. METRO 2039 turns that legacy around. Its antagonist is Hunter, whom 4A Games calls "none other than the first Spartan himself", now ruling as the new Fuhrer of the Novoreich.

The June 2026 Hunter trailer shows him "adorned in decorated Novoreich uniform, a fascist perversion of the iconic Spartan armour". His image looms over the Metro "in crumbling posters, flickering propaganda, and towering statues".

The PlayStation Blog describes the regime's reality: the Metro is "flooded with propaganda, misinformation, and fear", and people suffer under "the brutal belief… if it's hostile, you kill it".

Where METRO 2039 sits in the series

Mainline METRO games and where METRO 2039 fits
GameReleasedStory position
Metro 2033 2010 The original game, set in 2033
Metro: Last Light 2013 Sequel to Metro 2033
Metro Exodus 2019 Leaves Moscow; set in 2035
METRO 2039 February 4, 2027 Back to the Metro, six years after the original game

Metro Exodus took players away from Moscow. METRO 2039 returns to the tunnels and to the confined, dense spaces the series started with. 4A Games describes it as "leaning into what makes Metro special".

Dmitry Glukhovsky and a Ukrainian perspective

The METRO games are based on Dmitry Glukhovsky's best-selling novel trilogy. For METRO 2039 he co-wrote the story with 4A Games. Glukhovsky lives in exile after being sentenced in absentia in Russia to eight years in prison for criticising the invasion of Ukraine. He has said the game is "darker than anything you've seen before".

4A Games is a Ukrainian studio with offices in Kyiv and Malta. Bloch writes that many of the team worked through drone strikes, using batteries and generators. Russia's full-scale invasion changed the studio's approach: the game is "told from our uniquely Ukrainian perspective", with themes of "the consequences of war – the cost of silence, the horrors of tyranny, and the price of freedom".

Places you will visit

  • The Metro tunnels: claustrophobic, mutant-infested, and the heart of the game.
  • Station communities: populated stations where people live, fight and survive under the regime.
  • Sevastopolskaya Station: a shelter from the irradiated surface, still in the grip of the Fuhrer's propaganda.
  • The surface: irradiated Moscow streets and cityscapes, deadly swamps and wildlands beyond the city.

How the story is told

Game director Andriy Shevchenko calls the level design approach "frozen stories": each area is staged with items, bodies and props so observant players can piece together micro-narratives of a horrific past. The Epic Games Store listing promises a layered narrative co-written with Glukhovsky.

Survival is part of the storytelling. There is no traditional HUD; in-game objects such as a wristwatch counting down your gas mask filter replace on-screen meters. You fight radiation, repair degrading gear and recharge electronic devices, and you can often choose stealth over combat. GamingBolt reports that the series' Karma system returns, approached "a little bit differently".

Who you will face

The Epic Games Store listing names Novoreich soldiers and mutated enemies. The reveal showcase features a returning mutant, the Nosalis, and the Hunter trailer hints at new mutant variants. The new Shatun rifle is among the handcrafted weapons you will carry.
