Metro 2033 Limited Edition (2010)

The first METRO game, published by THQ, had a modest special edition. The Metro 2033 Limited Edition came in an embossed slipcover with four art cards and an in-game heavy automatic shotgun. It was released in the UK on March 19, 2010 at £39.99.

In the UK it was exclusive to the retailer GAME. In Australia the equivalent was sold as the Special Edition through EB Games. The extras were mostly digital: the only physical items were the slipcover and cards.

Metro: Last Light Limited and Ranger Editions (2013)

THQ announced the Metro: Last Light Limited Edition in December 2012 as a free upgrade for pre-orders, at the standard $59.99 price. It added Ranger Mode, the fan-favourite game type from Metro 2033, plus a Ranger load-out with extra military grade bullets and a modified AKS-74U rifle. In North America, PlayStation Network pre-orders of the digital Limited Edition also came with a free copy of Homefront.

Australia got its own version. The Ranger Edition, published by Deep Silver and exclusive to EB Games, was released on May 16, 2013 at AU$78 on PC and AU$88 on Xbox 360. On top of the Limited Edition extras, it included a copy of Dmitry Glukhovsky's Metro 2033 novel.

Metro Exodus Aurora Limited Edition (2019)

For Metro Exodus, released on February 15, 2019, Deep Silver introduced two very different premium products. The Aurora Limited Edition contained the game in an exclusive Steelbook, a "World of Metro" art book and the Metro Exodus Expansion Pass, with the story expansions The Two Colonels and Sam's Story.

Everything came in a custom metal outer case inspired by the Aurora, the locomotive at the centre of Exodus. Its official price is not verified here; a contemporary report put it at about $89.99.

Metro Exodus Spartan Collector's Edition (2018)

Revealed on November 19, 2018 and sold exclusively at the official metrothegame.com store, the Spartan Collector's Edition was the series' first big collector's box. It centred on a hand-painted, individually numbered resin statue of Artyom, 10.5 inches tall, recreating the announcement-trailer scene of Artyom fighting off a deadly Watchman.

The barrel-shaped package also held a replica of Artyom's Spartan Order dog tag, "Artyom's Memories" postcards and two Spartan Order patches. Deep Silver described supply as "strictly limited".

Metro Exodus Artyom Custom Edition (2019)

The rarest METRO collectible was never for sale. The Artyom Custom Edition was revealed in January 2019: only ten were made. The first went to 4A Games, and the other nine were given away through promotions.

• A fully functional, hand-made Nixie watch.
• A gas mask and filter.
• A working bullet lighter made from a decommissioned shell.
• A hand-made Spartan dog tag engraved with the winner's name.
• A map of the Aurora's journey in a leather case.
• A certificate signed by Dmitry Glukhovsky and 4A Games co-founder Andrew "Prof" Prokhorov.

How the METRO 2039 Collector's Edition compares

4A Games bills the METRO 2039 replica as a first "in METRO history": earlier sold editions offered statues, cards, dog tags and patches, and the only earlier gas mask came in the ten-copy Artyom Custom Edition. It is also the first top-tier METRO edition to put the game and the collectible in the same box.

Trends across the series

• From digital bonuses to physical collectibles. Early editions added in-game weapons and modes; later ones added statues, metal cases and now a wearable helmet.
• The Spartans as a recurring theme. Spartan Order dog tags and patches in 2018, a Spartan helmet in 2027.
• Higher prices. From £39.99 in 2010 to £129.99 for the 2018 box without the game, and £259.95 at UK retail for the 2039 box with the game.
• Wider distribution. The Exodus Spartan box was sold only through the official store; the 2039 box goes through selected retailers.

Collecting older METRO editions today

If you hunt for older METRO editions on the second-hand market, completeness matters most: check that statues come with their numbering, that dog tags, patches and postcards are present, and that digital codes are marked as used or unused. For the new edition, see the price guide and the pre-order guide.
